Chemistry is a branch of Science that studies the structure of matter, as well as its properties, especially the reactions that transform some substances into others.

It is an empirical Science based on experimentation. Because of its importance, it has been one of the most established basic Sciences for centuries.

Many of the advances that have contributed to improving the quality of life in the world are due to the progress made in Chemistry.

It contributes to the development of fields as disparate and important today as cancer treatment, molecular machines and computer materials technology.

Professional opportunities

The Degree's geographical area of influence can be considered as the South East of Spain. The socio-economic sectors of interest in this area are related to agricultural production, the agrifood industry and the chemical industry. There are an appreciable number of quality control laboratories for agrifood products, which employ chemistry graduates. They are also sought by laboratories in other geographical areas as well as by Research Centres.

On the other hand, the Macael region has become a point of study of natural stone and the development of new materials (polymeric in character) that are valued highly, both nationally and internationally. To this, one must add a wide range of companies whose production covers more general economic sectors, with activities as diverse as the synthesis of antibiotics or analgesics, perfumery, the isolation of natural products applied in organic cultivation, and companies related to the agrifood industry (juices, preserves, etc.).

All this, together with the education sector, means that the demand for Chemistry graduates in the province of Almeria is high in relation to the number of inhabitants.
