img_7098009.jpgThis Master's aims to train professionals capable of contributing to the development of the bio-economy, based on scientific knowledge that improves the competitiveness of our companies in the health, agrifood and environmental sectors.

This degree from the Faculty of Experimental Sciences falls within the strategic lines established by UAL almost a decade ago, aimed at strengthening the official postgraduate studies and at increasing and improving the student training offer. The training in Biotechnology of the Faculty of Experimental Sciences is reinforced by the Bachelor's Degree in Biotechnology that was implemented during the 2015/16 academic year.

The proposed Master's would be taught by university teachers from different areas (chemical engineering, genetics, microbiology, plant physiology, zoology and biochemistry) who have been working in the different Biotechnology fields for more than 20 years.

Furthermore, the master’s is offered within CEIA3 (Campus of International Agrifood Excellence), to which the UAL belongs, thus providing a significant national and international reach. In relation to the latter, all the core subjects of the Master's and several electives subjects are offered in both Spanish and English.

Suggested profile for newly enrolled students

From an academic point of view, and given the multidisciplinary nature of the master's degree, the appropriate student applicant profile would be someone with previous training in areas within the Science, Engineering or Health Sciences knowledge branches.

Without ruling out later additions, the following are established as preferential access profiles:

  1. Graduates in Chemical Engineering, Biology, Agricultural Engineering, Chemistry, Environmental Sciences, Biotechnology, Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Renewable Energy, Pharmacology, Food Science and Technology, Veterinary, Medicine.
  2. Bachelor's Degrees related to Life Sciences and Health Sciences, and other Higher-level Engineering.
  3. Other Bachelor's Degrees.

Professional and Academic opportunities

Upon completing these studies, graduates will have the academic and employment opportunities listed below:

Academic opportunities. Relation with other studies

The Master's is related to official national and international master's degrees and doctorates focused on applying the principles of Biotechnology: Agrifood, Bioprocesses, Chemical Engineering, Agrobiotechnology, Biochemical Engineering, Biotechnology of micro-organisms and animal cells, Food biotechnology, Environmental biotechnology and renewable energies, Biotechnology of natural products and drugs, and Marine biotechnology.

Furthermore, the growing interest in biotechnology over recent years has resulted in, among other things, a determined commitment by the State and European Administrations to develop training and research in this area.

There are a significant number of consolidated research groups in the UAL's Engineering, Biology and Geology departments with extensive experience in biotechnology, who have active projects within the National Plan, the Andalusian Regional Government, and the European Union.

Professional opportunities

img_7098006.jpgThe main job opportunities for students of the Master’s in Industrial and Agrifood Biotechnology will be professional, academic, research careers in Universities, Research Institutions and Centres, R&D+i Departments, and Bioprocessing Plants in companies from different sectors (agricultural, food, environmental, pharmacological, bioenergetic and marine) based entirely or partially on biotechnology.

There is currently a proliferation of biotechnology-based companies, and Spain, together with the other EU countries, is involved in the construction of a new economy based on biological resources and the application of knowledge (Knowledge Based Bio-Economy, KBBE).

UAL also has a close relationship with business that is dynamic and entrepreneurial, widely demonstrated in the area of more modern and productive agriculture, but equally willing to develop applications in other lines, as evidenced by the high number of EBTs generated in the province over recent years.
