Michel Mayor is one of today's most renowned physicists. Of Swiss nationality, he studied in Lausanne and received his PhD in Astronomy in 1971 at the Geneva Observatory.
Description
He has worked as a researcher at the Institute of Astronomy of the University of Cambridge, at the European Southern Observatory in northern Chile and at the Institute of Astronomy of the University of Hawaii. He discovered, together with Didier Queloz, the first extrasolar planet, which was a revolution in astronomy. Since then, thousands of exoplanets in the Milky Way have been explored. In 2019, he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics together with his student Didier Queloz, in addition to the Marcel Benoist, Pierre Jansse, Balzan, Shaw and Albert Einstein Medal prizes.
