Summary

The basic concepts of compression and coding will be presented first, and the transformations from the pixel or space domain to the frequency domain will be briefly introduced.

Description

We will continue with the presentation of different image and video encoders, for which we will see in detail their structure, architecture and their fundamental stages. Among the image encoders to be analyzed will be JPEG, JPEG2000 and an image encoder developed in the GATCOM research group, the LTW. In the field of video coding, the hybrid coding model on which the latest market standards are based, such as H.264/AVC and HEVC, will be explained, analyzing stages such as INTRA prediction or motion estimation. The fundamental perceptual coding techniques present in numerous quality metrics will be presented and we will see where they are located in the encoding chain of encoders such as HEVC. Finally, the most relevant features of the future new video standard, VVC, will be presented in comparison with the current standard, HEVC.
